NVidia 7600GS and new drivers
 

I'm done guys. The system refuses to load the new drivers and the generic driver gives me lousy graphics. I had a Radeon 9200SE that was working great with the generic driver. I changed it last night for the new NVidia. At first Suse wouldnt even give me an X Window. I surmounted that and ended up with generic driver and lousy graphics. So, I decided to download the NVidia drivers the 'easy way', with Yast. First updated the Kernel from 2.6.18.8-0.1-default to 2.6.18.8-1.ccj45 ( which is what NVidia show was what his drivers were ready for. I downloaded the new kernel-source, I made sure I had gcc and then downloaded 'x11-video-nvidia' and 'nvidia-gfx-kmp-kernel flavor'. Then proceeded to configure Xorg with 'sax2 -r' as root. That brought me to the screen to conf my resolution and monitor. Both, the Monitor and the video card appeared well recognized, but clicking OK and testing different resolutions brought only errors. At the end I'm still with generic drivers and lousy graphics. Can anyone help me please?

OK, I don't know much, but lets have a go.

Yes, to start with, SuSE, apparently has a slightly different (allegedly, easier) way of installing the nvidia driver - as I understand, you can still install them "the normal way" as well i.e. not with YaST/Sax etc etc.

I'll explain it the normal way - you need to make sure of your kernel version. That command is then once you know that, you also need to make sure that you have the matching kernel-sources, which are sometimes known as the kernel-headers, installed.

Got that ? Great.

So, then you need to get the nvidia driver, the best place for that is usually here at the nvidia site.

You'll obviously need the latest version to match the hardware that you have i.e. the architecture - X86 or X86_64 or whatever your system is (I notice that theres some mention of GPU's so make sure if any of that applies to you or not).

Goody good, you now have all the parts that you need to install the driver - Oh and make sure to read the readme file/instructions at their site.

So, the actual installation is quite straight forward.

You can either just kill the graphical display or logout, and then when you get the login page, there should be some sort of menu, if so, then you want the console login.

Lets presume you went for the console login.

So, then log in as root - I'll presume you're happy with doing that.

Then all you should have to do, is to move to the the directory where you downloaded the nvidia driver to (we'll presume that it's in your /home directory).From there, it's just a case of running the script command which is as you can see from the command, it's for the x86 version. If you're using something different then make sure you modify the command accordingly.

You'll get lots of text stuff come up on the page, some of which (from memory) asks a few Q's. You can either hit yes or Ok in response.

It should tell you stuff like, it can't find any pre-compiled kernel module, and that it will build the module for you - hence the reason for needing the kernel and the kernel-sources/headers (whichever SuSE actually calls them).

It then precedes to run the process and should end up with the message telling you that the install is complete (it doesn't take that long usually, a couple of minutes or so).

Ok, thats the driver installed.

Then in theory, all you need to do is to modify the xorg.conf file so that it actually knows to start the module. Theres a part in the readme/instructions at the nvidia site that tells you what you need to modify. In truth, it's only really 1 line.

My xorg.conf looks like this Forget all the commented sh1t my file shows, and other bit's that may or may not be the same as yours, the important line is the one that says If you've still got your file set to use the generic driver, it will say Driver "nv" (and yes my system hates that as well - along with the "vesa" driver - I have to install the nvidia one to get decent looking graphics).

As to how you change the file, well it's probably gonna be using vi or vim. So, still in the console (as root), you'd enter the command that open the file and allows you to move round it with the arrow keys (theres a way of making vi use a mouse to move the cursor but I've not ever tried that).

Before you can make the change, you'll probably have to hit the "insert" key - I think the file shows "insert" on the very bottom of the screen. so then make the change, from "nv" to "nvidia". Then you just have to save and close the file. Thats done by hitting the Esc key, and then entering :wq (yes thats colon followed by the letters w and q).

This should have dropped you back into a root prompt.

From there you can either just do the "startx" command or "reboot" command, either way you should arrive at a graphical login. You'll know if you got it right as you will have seen the nvidia splash screen.

If you already knew that lot then sorry to have wasted your time. If not then give it a go!

p.s. Oh and it's all well and good praising ATi cards, but nvidia currently have vastly superior linux support.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. You are right in almost all counts. What I did was: updated kernel. updated kernel-source, updated gcc, made sure I had 'make' and 'autoconf'. Then from the console: init3, at the command line:'root' then 'passwd', then: sh /Path/to/the/driver/nvidia-driver.run. Well it worked great. The driver ( 9755 ) took care of everything, it even reconfigured my xorg.file. I now have outstanding graphics. You and I reached the same conclusion. Thank you again.( I used init 5 to come back )

Actually I didn't ever bother checking the gcc/make/autoconf versions or presence. Just the kernel/sources and dowloaded driver. It's always "just worked".

I seem to recall managing to use the SuSE method once, but as I didn't really get on with SuSE (dependency problems) I couldn't remember how "they" did it.

I don't even really know the "debian method" even though the Sidux I'm using is based on Debian SID/Lenny - because the sidux people produce an updating script, which, when run, detects the chip manufacturer of the graphics device and the offers you the appropriate driver and after a y/n question, installs it for me! (it even knows that my graphics card is a rather elderly, mid-range nvidia device so it only offers me the older drivers that support my card - I understand that it offers the latest one(s) if you have a nice, up to date card).

Anyway, well done.
