nvidia 1.0-4496.hosed

I seem to have the usual problem that is posted all over the interent about getting nvidia drivers to work. I have tried to jump through all flaming whoopes and nothing seems to get them to work corectly.
I have found that when Mandrake boots and bombs, I startx and get the following error about failed to initialize nvidia kernel. But if I do the sh and reinstall the driver and then startx again it works. Then I can play Quake3 just fine.
But when I try to logout, it hangs up and then I have to shutdown -h now to get it turned off. It seems I have to reinstall the drivers every time I boot to get Quake3 to play, AARRGGG!

Update...I have tried some other things and have found that when I Vi the "modules.conf" file and add "alias char-major-195 nvidia", it gets removed when I have to reinstall the drivers. I'm using Mandrake 9.0 kernel 2.4.19-16mdk. any ideas????

Ok, I finally figured it out...I did a fresh install of Mandrake 9.0 then I installed 1.0-4191 and added load "glx" to xf86config-4 and reboot. It work fine the first time and plays Quake3 too..
