Out of the blue my START button as well as all the task bar icons went to right field from down below
I want to bring all of that back to the original positions..i.e. START at far left lower corner.
If you can help I need the STEP BY STEP method. I am not only new to Linux, I am new to any more than rudimentary PC -land

If I understand what you are saying, simply move your mouse to a bare spot on the menu.
right click and hold, move your mouse to where you want the menu bar to be, and let go
of the button. This will move your menu bar.

Thank you for the fast reply
#1 It took me 5 minutes to find out where to reply to you('quote' didnt sound like reply)
I dont see any bare spot on a menu (not sure where menu is)
I tried right click and move but there is no space at the bottom of the desktop, plus nothing went with the click/hold
Interestingly enough I now have the START button/icon at the top left of the desktop, plus a lot of other files to the right on the same line that should be in the body of the desk top.
I can live with this mess but my aged mind prefers to have things as they were for comfort.
Myabe come to Sarasota for a beach holiday and help an antique

What version of Linux are you using?
how many virtual desktops do you have?

What happens when you press ctl alt right arrow or ctl alt left arrow?

what were you doing just before this happened?
did you install anything?
did you change your screen resolution?

I think it would be helpful if you could mention the distribution you are using (*Buntu, Suse, Fedora, Mint, Debian, ...?) because they do not necessarily behave the same.

If you are using the Gnome desktop, you can move panels by selecting ALT and clicking on the panel you want to move, holding down the mouse button while you are doing so.

If you want to rearrange items on a panel, you need to make sure that the item is not locked (left-click icon and uncheck Lock), then you can drag them elsewhere, either to a different location on the same panel or even to a different panel. However, if there are any other locked icons in between the icon and the position you want to move it to, you may need to unlock those first, too.
