numlock and X Windows

Hey all,
I was wondering what this deal with numlock on Linux is. For instance, I've had huge problems doing things on Mathematica (such as highlighting code, etc.). Then after doing some serous googling, I figured out that I needed to disable numlock. I also have issues with ddd because of this as well. I guess I'm just looking for a better understanding of this issue.

If you go to the 'control panel' type thing in the graphical thing it will allow you to disable numlock. It is rather pushed at one.

Failing this, and at a quess, installing linuxconf - a Linux configuration tool - will also allow numlock to be disabled.

One of the main problems with the numlock key is that it buggers fvwm2's, the window managers, keybindings and so on.
