Numeric keypad behavior

Hi All,
I am having trouble because I never adapted to the inverted T cursor setup. I like to use the numeric keypad. However, in Linux (ubuntu gedit for example) when I hold down the shift key, I get numbers instead of being able to highlight blocks. Is there any place I can change the mapping? I only want numbers if NUM-LOCK is on.

Thanks,
z

Keyboards and how they seem to work with Linux...

I have noticed the same thing. I am doing two things to find out what the issue may be. I am trying a couple of keyboards. It's still hardware with Linux I think, even here. So far I have tried a Knoppix, Ubuntu and Gentoo disk and I am getting the same keyboard action. I am going to try a couple of keyboards to make sure whether it's a "hard" or "soft" problem.

Keyboard mappings, language packs etc. are one of the murky areas still for computers.

I'll let you know what I find out too. Worst case scenario, I'll have to modify the keyboard driver and filter the scan codes.
