NTFS files on Ubuntu

Hello everyone,

I am really green to linux. I am trying to do a data recovery on a old HDD that has windows XP home on it. The problem is that I can not get the drive to mount. I can see it but it will not allow me to access it to pull the files from it. I just need to know what commands to use to force it to mount and how to run them with all permissions. Thanks for any and all help.

you have to mount your HDD:

if your kernel support thn it will work
mkdir /mnt/ntfs
mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs

otherwise you need to install some packages like fuse or ntfs-3g

then mount your HDD

mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs/

if your file system is fat then its easy just type
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ntfs/

also add this in /etc/fstab file, for permanent mount
