NTFS file read speed
 

Hi, ive just recently started using linux and im wondering about the time it takes to copy files from a NTFS partition to an ext3 partition.
I am copying about 3 GB worth of files from the NTFS partition to my linux partition and it takes a VERY long time. Im just wondering if this is just because of the NTFS driver, because it takes about 10 times less time to do the same using Windows. Is this like that for all file copying, say from ext3 to ext3 or is it just because of the NTFS driver.

Im using slackware 9.1 with the 2.6.5-rc1 kernel.

my NTFS read speed is slightly slower (i wouldn't say 10 times...maybe 2 or 3 times) than other file systems...i believe it is just the kernel drivers for it...you could always switch to FAT32 if you want quicker access time..of course the conversion time would take a while. also you could make a FAT32 partition and copy the NTFS data from windows sinc you say its faster in windows.
