I've installed ns 2.35 in fedora 28 using vmware. It is running properly.Even nam is also executed separately. But while running a tcl script, follwing thing happen...

[osboxes@swapnilsb ~]$ cd NS
[osboxes@swapnilsb NS]$ ns test.tcl
running namů
[osboxes@swapnilsb NS]$ Cannot connect to existing nam instance. Starting a new one...

and then nothing happens

Welcome to LQ.

Can you run the NAM trace file with a command ?
Like : $ nam out.nam &

Will nam open with a default example ?
cd ns-2.35/tcl/ex/
ns shuttle-mcast.tcl

When I tried to open using 'nam out.nam' it showed the message as 'nam: unable to open the file "out.nam.nam"'.
And when I tried ns shuttle-mcast.tcl, it successfully displayed the network of 255 nodes.
I also tried 694demo.nam example but it is showing messange as 'floating point exception (core dumped).

Well, in some files, you cannot use 'nam out.nam'.
... Please edit to : nam out &

Actually you can also run all NAM traces with $ nam out &
... I.e. `nam┤ is automatically selecting the right file (if present.)

Ok I get it. I've observed that when I run tcl file directly from terminal, nam works and shows the results and when I first open the folder containing the tcl files in another window and run tcl file in terminal then it shows core dumped message or unable to connect nam message.
