notify-send failure

debian squeeze
i have installed libnotify-bin in a vmware machine (vmware remote console)

when i run
notify-send "test" under the root user I get the following error

Glib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

I have also run apt-get updates and I have the latest version and no updates required and I have rebooted the vmware machine

notify-send requires a graphical environment. It does not work from a console. It also requires D-BUS. See for more info. The error is from GTK+.
