Well, you've answered all my questions... I am really stumped on what's the issue with your system.

You're not doing anything "funny" with the grub loader right? I mean, it just seems odd that if the system is executing some of the start-up files in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d, why isn't it starting all of them?

Do you see any error messages when the splash screen is displayed during boot? If you do not see any messages, click on the details link on the splash screen.

This was my exact thought, but I am happy to say the problem is solved.

I had installed 2 nics recently on the server and could not get them to both activate on boot. Someone suggested turning off the networkmanager service. I did and not only do both nics start on boot, but all the services start as well. I think since networkmanager was one of the last scripts to run in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d it might have been killing the network and in turn killing the services (sshd, vsftpd). Thats my only guess... To be honest it is killing me not to know for sure, but I am happy its fixed.

It's great that you found a solution/workaround!

If your still mystified as to what caused the problem, you can always launch NetworkManager manually, then check the log record in /var/log/messages. Maybe there's a hint or two in there.
