not sure what to do now...
 

I have just installed slackware 10.2 and im duel booting with win xp pro sp2 and everything went fine it installed and everything...but now i dont know how to get into the kde interface ( i know that is a VERY noob question but i am new to linux and dont know any commands). and another question...is there a way to boot directly into kde?

BTW im using a laptop and i had major problems with debian so i dont even know if slackware is actually working.

Did you not install Lilo or Grub when you installed slack? If not, I believe you can pop in your installation CD and there may be an option there that can help you (not sure how to boot into a distro without a bootloader).

yes i installed lilo and loads up and i log in and everything...and then thats it im still in the command prompt and i dont know how to get out of it.

ok.. you don't know if slackware is working??
right well this will be quite easy to ascertain. when you boot up into linux do you see a login prompt after everythings finished loading?

how to get into KDE?
do you have kde installed?
when you start up do you jsut have a console login prompt or a nice pretty graphical one?
if you've just got a console based one try loging in and type 'startx'

if you've got a graphical login then its probabal that you've got an X server installed along with some sort or window manager.

as far as getting it to load at start up you might wanna try googling for that.

so then i just enter startx? and it will take me to the graphical interface? cool. im really sorry if i am confusing but i dont explain myself very well. btw i did log in as root and entered my password i just thought it errored or something when it didnt go into a graphical interface and stayed in the command prompt screen. Oh yea and i did install kde.

Create a normal user account and use that to "startx"! It's much safer and you can always "become" root if you need to.

hell yes, sorry. whatever you do don't startx as root. its just not the done thing. i was going to say that but i forgot.

it might be a good idea to see how far you can go just using the console tho.

Try Fedora Core, is more friendly than slack if you are new to linux...

why Fedora? why not Slack? =)

If you are new to linux, Slackware requires more configuration by hand. Mandrake, RH, Fedora, and Suse have more of a GUI "control panel".

Try others,for example,Mandriva2006,SUSE,etc.

well i am not sure how to create another user but kde is working fine even though im logged in as root...not sure why its a problem...and i have had no errors the only problem is im not sure if i have sound and i dont think my wireless is working. is there some kind of tutorial i can read to learn how to install drivers or programs?

To create a "normal" user just type adduser at the command prompt. You will be asked several questions, the info you have to type in is the user name and password. Fill in the rest just if you like.
I don't follow the suggestions to drop Slackware. I started with Mandrake (Mandriva) which was said to be a newbie friendly distro. In the end it was a little bit easier, but not too much (IMHO). Switching early to Slackware was the best I could do to learn handle Linux (IMHO :D).
