not starting knoppix

hi friends,
I have installed windows xp and knoppix in my system. When installing knoppix,i made to install grub on root partition instead on mbr,my root partition is on hda9 and swap is on hda7,but after succesfully completing the installation, when i restarted the system,i dont get any bootloader menu, but knoppix is installed on my hard drive.
so please tell me hoe to start knoppix OR i have to install once more and the select mbr option to install grub in mbr.
thank you for replies
alok

If you copy the KNOPPIX boot sector to a file and via floppy, usb flash, or some other method get it onto the root directory (C:\) of MS Windows, you can modify C:\boot.ini so that the MS bootloader will give you a choice of booting Windows or Linux.

Your other choice is to put GRUB on the MBR and have it boot KNOPPIX and chainload for booting MS, but you don't need to reinstall KNOPPIX to do this (although that would be one way of doing it). You can run KNOPPIX as a live CD to do this, which might (or might not be) faster than a reinstall. Once you know what your doing, this should take very little time, but I don't know how long the install took!

You should be able to find instructions for doing either on the Internet. Note that I have not done either of these, although I have done similar things to the second option. I have only read about the first option.

I have reinstalled Knoppix, where swap is in (hdc,7) & root is in (hdc,8) & i have installed grub into mbr.
but when i try to boot knoppix i got following error line

kernel panic-not syncing vfs:unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(22,8); But i am not able to understand error. Can you please made me understand the problem.

I am not trying to picky, but just so I am certain in case I need the info for my next reply, are you referring to what KNOPPIX calls /dev/hdc7 and /dev/hdc8? (BTW, the version of KNOPPIX I have is 2 or 3 years old. I hope that doesn't cause me problems in helping you.)

Also, what kind of an install did you do? (I am not at a location where I have my reference material handy, but my recollection is there are at least two different types of KNOPPIX installations possible.)

Boot into KNOPPIX as a live cd and mount /dev/hdc8. I believe that in the /mnt/hdc8/boot/grub/ directory there should be a file called either menu.lst or grub.conf. Would you post the contents of that please?
