(NOT SOLVED) $DISPLAY not set error in ARCH Linux.

Hi, I'm having problems loading compiz-fusion or the settings with my nvidia driver, or driver itself.

Basically, I installed Arch (in vmware) then ran: pacman -Syu, pacman -S libgl xorg mesa xf86-video-vesa hal xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard compiz-fusion alsa alsa-util nvidia I've also added a user. I'm following the wiki guide but I'm not sure where to go from here.

here's the error messages:

http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/...chine/nuff.gif

basically it says that my nvidia driver is incorrect or isn't configured properly. I have an Nvidia 7300gt btw, does anybody know which driver I should be using??
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...195.36.24.html
This one should work, I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly. it still says $DISPLAY not set when I type startx/ccsm/fusion-icon. And alos when I run pacman -S nvidia, is it downloading version 195.36.24?

I've been reading these but still no answers...http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=90918

cheers

I am not a vmware guru but I am using virtualbox for my testing of distros but I do not have direct access to my video card but rather an intermediate
driver that allows for integration of 2d/3d. Are you supposed to have access to the in machine card?

I think so, but I only have an old P4 w/o Hyper-V.

Get rid of everything having to do with NVIDIA and 3D.

Then try a non-3D window manager, like Openbox.

(Sorry I didn't notice this thread earlier)

thanks although I'm not having problems with open box, it's compiz that's not working.

What kind of issues exactly?

And you're saying Openbox works fine?

compiz isn't going to work in vmware. vmware provides 3D acceleration in the form of direct3d to windows guests. It does not do opengl acceleration at the moment.

Virtualbox does provide opengl acceleration, but I don't believe even that is capable enough to run compiz.

If you want to use compiz, use it on real hardware.

So basically either install Arch directly on real hardware, or completely forget about Compiz. There are many stacking window managers available, like FVWM, IceWM, JWM, (Black|Flux|Open)box, Xfwm, Metacity, and many more. (unlike compositing WMs, stacking window managers don't need hardware acceleration to run fast)
