Not booting using BootMagic 8
hi
i just recently installed RedHat 8.0 on a partition (dual boot with win98se). through the installation process i choose Grub as the default boot loader. i also used partition magic 8 and installed the bootmagic addin, however when i attempt to load linux my machine just seems to hang. i have to revert to using the bootup disk i created. anybody offer any advice or had similar prob? cheers |
What stage does it hang in?
Also, some people report problems with letting PM create partitions. Might want to try fdisk or let RH make the partitions with Disk Druid instead. |
BM locked for me, but version 7 was ok, Does that make anysense??

PM doesn't really work for me...it always can't seem to correctly find my partitions. I use system commanders partition manager...works like a charm :) Well did u try installing grub again?? it might be that BM is not set up correctly..

Where did you install Grub at? BootMagic has to be pointed at it. If you're not sure, check your /etc/grub.conf file. Since the MBR is handled by BootMagic, Grub will need to be in the superblock (beginning) of your Linux partition.

i would just install grub in the MBR and just use that....
i think you can install grub in the MBR by grub-install /dev/hda (or whatever is ur hdd) or something similar..i forget...and then just modify the menu.lst in the /boot/grub folder to ur liking....don't do this without first learning grub though..i have this great site that tells you how to use grub but i don't got it with me here..i am at work :'(...i will post it if you need it when i get home.. |
Using a third party boot manager is almost always unnecessary. And using PM to resize a FAT32 partition is also almost always unnecessary.
Use Grub, or Lilo, installed on the MBR of the primary bootable hard drive. When installed with Linux and Win named and properly identified as to location, these free bootloaders will work wonderfully. |
