ok now I want to give a random hit

are you using IPV6?
just do as following

Code:
#service ip6tables stop
Create a file under /etc/modprobe.d (e.g. “blacklist-ipv6.conf”) with the following 2 lines, in the order shown:
Code:
#cd /etc/modeprobe.d
#vi blacklist-ipv6.conf
install ipv6 /bin/true
blacklist ipv6
Code:
add the following line to /etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING_IPV6=no

This is something which I found on Google....

we don't use the proxy anymore so should i for exporting http variable still then?

On that server do the following

cp -pv /etc/yum.conf /etc/yum.conf.backup
cp -rpv /etc/yum.repos.d /etc/yum.repos.d.backup

rpm -qa |grep yum

Sorry my reply came late. Yes I would suggest the http proxy thing and then try the yum re-install later on
If you're not using http proxy anymore then the http proxy variable probably wont help much.

Just to understand better, what do you mean the GUI doesnt work in ns0? Do you mean the CentOS gnome desktop is not accessible/viewable when you attach a monitor + keyboard to the server?

/home/sarah ought to work as well when you do the backup (cp -pv is copy preserve file ownership/permission and verbose)

I'm tempted to ask Sarah if i can see this server myself

oh thats ok Mr.Aazan,u have been helping me a lot..

well ya thats what i meant, the GUI desktop environment like that in windows doesnt work in the primary name server...it is accessible only through the CLI mode, thats why instead of being in the server room,i have doing remote login to ns0..

i don't understand what the earlier person did with it or if something went wrong on its own..

put a hash at the starting of all these lines in your repo file

Code:
#[addons]
#name=CentOS-$releasever - Addons
#mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo
=addons
#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/addons/$basearch/
#gpgcheck=1
#priority=1
#gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5
and try

Code:
#yum clean all
#yum update
Well this is not a permanent solution to your problem but I just wanna check whether after this yum works or not
