not able to switch to virtual console

I am not able to switch to virtual console by pressing ctrl+Alt+F2 or F3. It does nothing. I want text console for PAM configuration. I have vmware player installed on windows7 and using SUSE linux through it.
I am not sure, is it installation problem of VMware?

It has been a while since i tried that from the dark side with Linux in the VM, but for some reason I feel like there's a shift button in there too:

ctrl+alt+shit+f2, etc
