I'm new to the use of Linux. My version is a Linpus Linux-type, just bought the Acer Aspire One, and here's the case.
I can't find out how to install downloads. I'm not able to update Firefox, and I'm not able to update/install Java (though it says I already have it installed, but various web pages disagree). I'm not able to install any .exe-files I download.

You won't be able to use your .exe files unless you load Wine. You should look at the Wine web site for additional information.
This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

Ok, but here's the thing, when I try to open or run Wine, the same thing appears as with all the other programs. It's opened in Xarchiver, or something, where there's a list of all the files comprising the program, and I'm not able to click or open any of the files. Conundrum!

Are you trying to update the programs using downloaded .exe files? Those are Windows executables, and won't run without using a virtual machine or an emulator. The best way to update them is to use the package manager that came with your distro (if it has one).

You've downloaded the source code, which you'll need to compile before you can run it. As I mentioned above, if your distro has a package manager, use it to install programs.
if your computer was already activated when you bought it (like mine was) then you should locate your restore disk that came with it and do a system restore. This will reset the computer back to its first boot, and then you will be able to set the root password. thereafter you should be able to do software installation.
