not sure which distro but you have to go into options F1 or F2 and tell it to boot the 64 bit kernel ok make sure the live cd has that option. puppy linux 3.01 try that. also pclinux.

All AMD64 processors are fully capable of booting any i386 Live-CD (or installed kernel, for that matter). When you try booting from the LiveCD, what exactly happens? Is an error displayed? Does it just hang? Try making sure the kernel doesn't get passed a "quiet" or "splash" option. (How you do this varies by CD -- if you specify your CD, I'll try to find the exact options for you.)

You should give more detail on which 32-bit liveCD(s) you tried and what went wrong when you tried them.

My sons new AMD athlon X2 64bit dual core processor with 2 GB ram booted without difficulty in every 32-bit liveCD I tried except Linux Mint.

Across a wider range of computers, those liveCDs often needed some simple boot options to be usable (selecting the vesa driver was often needed, turning off the splash screen was sometimes needed, etc.) Probably even the Linux Mint liveCD (by far the lemon of the lot) would have worked if I just knew a bit more about the right boot options to try or just experimented with boot options more before giving up.
