Not able to boot into new kernel?

Dear all,

This is gaurav. I am using FC12 (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64) and i have tried compiling the new kernel, downloaded the sources from the kernel.org for X86_64. the kernel version is 2.6.32.15. I have successfully solved the mkinitrd issue refering to the tutorial on the howtoforge.net but still not able to boot into the newly compiled kernel. I have updated menu.lst, set default=0 to boot into the new kernel. please help me out.

can i compiled my old kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64? I dont have source code installed that is bugging me while writing kernel modules?

thanks and regards

What exactly do you mean by you can't boot into the kernel? What exactly happens? You shouldn't have to compile your old kernel. Unless you removed it you should still have it available. If you did remove it you shouldn't do so until you've tested the new kernel completely.

Dear Mr. Majestic

I have just downloaded the sources for 2.6.32.15, compiled it by referring to the tutorial on howtoforge.net. i have set this kernel as my default kernel by updating the menu.lst

My original kernel is intact, i am able to boot from it.

when i reboot, i have two option in boot loader: one is my newly compiled kernel (2.6.32.15) and other is my original kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 from which i can still be able to boot.

when i selects my newly compiled kernel (2.6.32.15), it goes in infinite loop (blank screen and it echoes the character typed).

hope i am reasonably clear now.

please guide me through this.

Thanks and Regards,

Gaurav Holey
