NOOB question concerning Print Filters

I would like to set up an HP Print Filter using either the decimal, octal, or hex character codes. I have some wide [ 225 column ] reports and I need to change the cpi and lpi sizes so they will print on standard 8.5x11.0 HP printers.

Any idea where I might go to find how to create them, where to keep them, and how to indicate their use to the printcap file?

Any points or help would be much appreciated.
