Noob question

What is the name of the file that shows the output from the boot process? Things like what devices are found and what drivers are loading etc...

Err.... Forgotten the name of the actual log file - the file the kernel writes its endless winging to - but the command dmesg sounds like the sort of thing you might be after. Try:

$ dmesg|less

Another good tip is to use tail instead of less if you just want to see that last couple of messages:
$ dmesg|tail

to take that one step further

dmesg | tail -30f

which will show the last 30 lines and keep it open for when any new messages come in i.e. mounting a usb drive

Which distro?
iirc, Suse is /var/log/boot.log, /var/log/boot.msg
RH /var/log/dmesg
also check /var/log/messages
