non-contiguous level getting higher semi-rapidly

My non-contiguousy percentage for my ext3 root partition is climbing somewhat rapidly. i've been running e2fsck the past few days for an unrelated issue and it's gone from 2.4% to 2.5% to 2.6% (after installing ut2004) to 2.7% (after emerge --sync in gentoo) and now to 2.9% (after clearing some logs and deleting some temporary files) My other computer which also runs gentoo has a percentage of 3.4. I'm not sure if it's a gentoo related thing or if I'm doing something wrong.

I know these are not extremely high, but i've only had this computer up and running for about two weeks and 2.9% seems kinda high for that. especially since it keeps getting worse. Anybody have some insight on this issue?
