noatun kaboodle crash immediately when a file is played

The title says it all really, i'm assuming this goes for any program using the arts sound server, alsaplayer runs fine but xmms just repeatedly makes me choose a file each time i click play and changing the sound device in the xmms preferences apparently makes no difference. I'm completely unsure what to do with this, i can't locate and re-install arts because it's bundled with kde and i can't tell which package it's in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you could try changing some settings in kde control center -> sound -> sound server. Maybe the sound I/O thing?

You can check if arts is running from the command line using
artsshell status
If it says something like cannot access sound server, then it's not running. You can start it manually by
kcminit arts
and stop it by
artsshell terminate

Xmms doesn't need arts but noatun and kaboodle do. If you can live without these, maybe just disable arts from starting up.
