No working C compiler found - but It is installed! :S

Hello everybody... I am introducing myself in my first post... I am discovering linux, and I am starting to love it... And hate it when problems appear.. But Itīs a nice opportunity to learn.
I am building a "torrent box" with a P3, 256Mb RAM , 10gb hdd for system and a 320 GB hdd for download.
I choose AntiX as distro for this box. I am trying to install some software that requires compile... But everytime I try to do "./configure" I get the "No working C compiler found."
GCC is installed, with all dependancies.. but still no luck.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Try installing "build-essential"

So, assuming synaptic package manager:

sudo aptitude install build-essential

Hello again...

"gcc --version" returns:
gcc (Debian 4.3.4-2 ) 4.3.4

When I run aptitude install build-essential it reinstalls. (I always used apt-get), but the same error remains...

I am trying now an "aptitude -upgrade" and see what happens... But the problem persists for now...
