I really loved to install Yellow Dog Linux on my PS3. Everything worked okay after insall. But there is no way I can get my FireFox to go online wireless. Strange, because the same network adapter is used also by the PS3 OS and works fine via WiFi. After going through Network set up I get a message " ethernet device could not be initialised "
" command failed: /sbin/modprobe gelic network driver "
" FATAL: Module Gelic Network Driver not found "
I saw this posted somewhere else on this forum but there was no real answer after someone else started like a new thread whitin that question...
So, I hope this new thread wil give some clarity. Because as a newbie, but enthousiast about Linux and YDL on PS3 in particular, I couldn't solve this problem myself.
Hope someone likes to look into this as more people seem to have problems with this. Thanx.
Is this a USB WiFi device? Last time I heard, the PS3's internal WiFi was not accessible via Linux.
If it is a USB device, you need to be sure that the kernel actually have drivers for it. With a USB WiFi adapter...the most likely answer unfortunately is no, the kernel does not have drivers for it.
Hi, thanx for reply. No, it's no USB device. PS3 has internal WiFi card. My router/modem is directly connected to telephone cable (ADSL + broadband 20mb) no usb devices connected. Searched Google but no other real solutions. . .
The PS3 has a very small userbase, and those that are running Linux on it are in an even smaller still minority. Getting support for Linux on the PS3, especially the customized YDL version, is going to be difficult outside of a forum dedicated for it.
But I did look online and see that the WLAN hardware is now supported, but only after you update your system. Perhaps you are missing some updates, specifically to your kernel/modules? Also make sure you are booting the proper kernel, if it gives you the choice. I also hear that the Ethernet and WLAN cannot be used at the same time under the current environment, so make sure your Ethernet port does not have anything connected to it.
Hi. Thanx for the clear answer.
I get your point. I couldn't find a specific YDL for PS3 forum so I came here.
Thanx for looking on the net on places I haven't! But I must have the latest distribution, as it was mentioned on teh mirror download site dated 15th of may. Typical to distribute a special YDL for PS3 and then not support the PS3 hardware fully... I could have installed Ubuntu as wel?! I read a post on the net of someone who did... would that be a better solution?? It has a much bigger userbase. And better updates? What would you recomend... thanx.

Hello ... I have the same problem ... YDL works fina but I cant get online!!! ... did you find a solution???
Thanks!
If you update your installation of YDL, you will certainly have WiFi support now. Is that the problem you are having, or a general networking failure?
No, definitely no network problem, works perfect with original OS from PS3.
Thanks for looking into this topic and finding the update.
I allmost don't dare to ask, but as I am still a novice in Linux matters, how do I update when I don't have a network connection directly from YDL on PS3 to the web?
