no wired internet on any live cd

OK, the story so far:

I built this computer myself about a year ago, currently running Win7 Pro with no problems. The motherboard is an MSI H81M ECO. I have no wireless card in this machine and no desire to install one, as the LAN connection works just fine in Windows.

I would like to try out a few different versions of linux, and wanted to use live CDs without installing to accomplish this. I'm not all that familiar with linux in general but like the idea of free options just in case.

I've created several live CDs including Mint 17.2 and Ubuntu 14.04, and a friend gave me one with Lubuntu on it, not sure what version, but probably a year or so old.

I can get these CDs to boot up with no major problems, but once they do I can't get the wired internet to work at all. They try, say they are connecting, and then eventually timeout and I get a message saying I'm not connected. I have no idea what to do to correct this problem. I want to try them out a bit without actually installing, but can't really do much of anything without internet access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you have to update your drivers, but since you dont have a connection yet you might need to use another computer and download the drivers you need on a disk or something. Maybe you can use your phone if u have an sd card but i havent tried it...

I can download and save to my hard drive using windows, and access it from the live OS, but I have no idea what to download or how to install it once I do.

Mybad drivers for linux actually come with the linux OS so all you need to do is sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade in command terminal. If youre on mint just type in your menu 'driver manager' in the search applications bar.

Hi kyria9...

Welcome to the forum

If you would, during a live session, please open a terminal and copy and paste the following command (into the terminal)...

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
Then open a text document and copy and paste the entire results on to it and save it to a flash drive. You should be able to retrieve this file when you access your drive after booting into Windows 7. Please include these results in your next post. Thanks!

Regards...

OK, here is the results of that:

mint@mint ~ $ lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
00:19.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (2) I218-V [8086:15a1] (rev 05)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Device [1462:7817]
Kernel driver in use: e1000e
mint@mint ~ $

The only thing the driver manager gave me was some stuff about the graphics which it wouldn't let me change anyway.

Hi kyria9...

Thank you for the output. From what I see here, it appears that learnin2cocatinate may have the best solution, which is upgrading your driver. Follow the solution given under "1 Answer." You can follow the same procedure you did for the lspci report: Simply download the driver to your Windows 7 desktop or any location you choose and then copy it to your flash drive. Then you can retrieve it when you boot up Linux.

However, bear in mind, you may have to install the distribution of your choice to your hard drive for this to work properly, I'm not sure. Before you install Linux to your hard drive, make a backup of all the files you want to save and make sure you have a restore CD or Microsoft copy of Windows 7 in case something goes wrong! Linux will wipe out the Windows boot loader and replace it with its own.

Regards...
