No wifi in Ubuntu 14.04 on HP530 lapto. Also Ubuntu will not shutdown

Hi guys, I am Carl. Sorry if this is the wrong place but it was suggested to post here as this is my first question.

I have an old Vista laptop that was not working. It is a HP 530 with a Celeron M. I have installed ubuntu 14.04 but have two major problems-

1) I cannot detect any wifi networks. It does work with an ethernet cable so I have internet access but not via wifi.

2) Laptop will not shut down via the menu shutdown option. It just gets to the Ubuntu shutdown screen with the little red/white dots underneath the Ubuntu name/logo and stays there. I have to force shutdown by holding down the power button.

I have a little Linux experience, but really not much. I have tried several solutions as per posts on various forums and as per a Youtube video, but no joy Any and all help appreciated! Thanks in advance!

And what were those solutions??

If you have no WiFi it's likely that your firmware isn't loading and we can't know whats going on in the shutdown without the log.

Ubuntu 16.04 was released today you might give that a go also.

I have posted two replies to Chris. Neither are showing. Not sure what's going on? Thanks for your attempt to help Chris. But if my replies won't show then the whole thing grinds to a halt. Obviously the mods are not allowing me to post any more. So, to the mods- Thanks guys! People like you are why Linux will never be the #1 distro even though it should be!

Why is this post showing but the ones where I detail the solutions already tried are not? Moderators are deleting/restricting completely normal posts. I will have to try another forum I guess.......

It's highly unlikely that your posts are being deleted unless you broke a rule and ever then a mod would edit your post and post in the thread.

I posted two replies with the steps I took to rectify both my problems and the links to Youtube and Ubuntu Forums so you could see the original content. I got a message that said the posts would appear after moderation...... Both did not appear here....... I am currently downloading 16.04 as per your advice. I will do a clean install. If I get the same problems I will come back and ask. Thanks again for your help Chris!

Thanks but does LinuxMint come with the wifi drivers for old HP laptops? Will the shutdown option in the dropdown menu function on LinuxMint?

The problem is it's not old HP laptops so much as it's which specific card you have for example here's mine

Code:
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 4b)
The "driver" for that is located in a /lib/firmware if there is nothing in lib firmware the Wifi card doesn't work.

If you're WiFi needs firmware that is not included then you have to download and then move it to /lib/firmware but we don't know that until you output a lspci so we can find out.

You have a thing called a log viewer in most GUI's on Linux I don't however know what it's called in Ubuntu just hit the windows key and type log and it should pop up. Everything you do with the computer is kept there because there is splash screen instead of a wall of text you have to go there to find out why your shut down is hanging. It's quite possible that you didn't make yourself an administrator and don't have privledges to shut down but we need the log to see whats going on...

Most of all just take your time and deal with things slowly you're not going to master this tomorrow or the next day most of us have been doing this for years and still only scratch the surface. I work in training and operations for the Army one day I'm making pretty pictures and the next I'm hanging targets in a shoot house If I can do it anyone can.
