No volume control with XMMS
I'm having a bizarre problem with the volume control in XMMS on RH8:
I ran the "Sound Card Detection" utility (redhat-config-soundcard) and it correctly identified my on-motherboard sound chip:
Vendor: Silicon Integrated Systems
Model SiS7012 PCI Audio Accelerator
Module: i810_audio
The test sound plays OK and XMMS works fine *except* the volume control doesn't work. If I open the RH8 Volume Control panel, only the Mute button under "pcm" mutes the audio. None of the volume control sliders have any effect on volume, except if I drag the pcm volume control down to 0% which causes the audio to be muted. The volume and balance controls in XMMS have the no effect. Mute and setting the audio volume to 0% both mute the audio.
I'm figuring that I have the wrong audio driver, but which is the correct one and where would I find it ? It's nice to have sound, but I'd prefer to be able to adjust the volume too :-) I know, I know, give 'em cake and the next thing you know they'll want a revolution ;-)
Thanks for any insights !

if you are using KDE you can use Kmix for your volume.
It won't help you anything with XMMS though

I don't know off hand what module you'll need for your card. Try searching G4L with the chipset name and you'll come up with lots of answers I'm sure.

Hope this helps

I've never been able to control volume within XMMS, I always thought that was the mixer's turf and nothing could change that...
Kmix does it for me, but I find it annoying also...especially since I've switched to blackbox.

It turns out that the problem was with the XMMS output plugin config. I was using "eSound Output Plugin 1.2.7 [libesdout.so]" and unchecking "Volume controls OSS mixer" unlocked the volume control and tada! the balance control too. So now I can control volume and balance in XMMS. Of course, the Gnome Volume Control has no effect. I'm not sure exactly how all these things are supposed to work, I'll leave that for a rainy day.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone !
