- No Virtualization system - none of them - can do 64-bit guest without new hardware support (the intel VT and equivalent AMD)?
- It means if you have a typical 64-bit laptop (c early-2011), you can only run 32-bit guests under your 64-bit virtual farm?

First: nearly any statement about what you CANNOT do with computers is probably false.
Second: if it is true, wait a few minutes and that will change.

The CPU extensions give virtualization engines a good boost, but I would not say that it is impossible. I would check the latest VirtualBox.

The only machines I have with enough horsepower and memory to run virtual AND a desktop have a cpu with extensions, so none of my testing would apply.

I have a laptop circa 2008 with centrino duo. This quite happily runs slackware 64 13.37 and virtualbox running 64 bit RHEL guest.

I have a shuttle system at work, bought in early 2010 for around 1000 euros that runs 64 bit redhat, kvm, and 64 bit virtual machines. And the virtual machines are very cpu intensive, so i can tell you that they are using the 64 bit hardware natively.
