I have the same problem it works when I am running it on a live cd, but doesn't when i install it. I have reinstalled it 4 times (beginner so it choses the deciding for me; also wipe entire hard drive and start again has always been my method of installing this).

Also calling your computer root is that a bad thing> or should I keep it as kali (default).

Help please I jumped from cinnnamon to this to use the tools. I no longer have cinnamon installed (but i have it on a live usb).

You could as an alternative install Terminator.
It's a terminal that has multiple functions and can do a lot of things.

Yes I am using Kali 2.0

I am attempting take 5 and will try and download said tools (terminator and the tilda). But I will install alongside cinnamon.
So I need a 16gb swap file and the rest is a ext4 file?

16 GB for a linux-swap partition is overkill. A 1 to 2 GB swap partition is sufficient.

Judging from you posts on the Kali forum, you are not ready to use Kali.
No offence intended, but if you do not know what partitions are, you do not have the requisite knowledge to use a system designed for security professionals.Why?

Kali Linux is taught as a prerequisite for a ceh course of which I am currently in. Comments that aren't helpful don't help people learn, also this is in the newbie section so I believe its well suited to this thread.

So why do I want the tools in kali working on mint because I can't access my terminal.

I know what partitions are and how to enable then generally so my question was aimed at combining two is running within the same partition.

I have the ability to learn and therefore can succeed in the industry. I am interested in this as I said switching from windows.
My problem is no terminal in kali when I install it on the hard drive but it works when I use it in a live USB.
In order to progress in my course I need to use these tools in terminal so I need it working. Once working I am confident that in
time I will work out my broadcom wireless driver issue.

As a senior moderator I would of hoped you would help, I have posted this original post on both the kali we site and my course website as well.

The question why do you want those tools was a good question. In order for anyone to help with most problems, they need to know what the goal is.
Good luck with your course, but for the record, a desire to stop using Windows is irrelevant.

Telling someone they are not ready for something is helpful. It is blunt, but not rude. I realise this endeavour is part of a course you are studying, but that does not change the facts that: Kali is a system designed for professionals who know what they are doing; and as with everything, basics must be learned before moving on to advanced concepts or procedures. I highly recommend doing more research into the basics of Linux. This is not to scare you away, but to encourage you to approach this in a logical and easier manner. I cannot help wondering if the course you are taking is meant for beginners. Is it?

The remark regarding partitions was from the suggestion from another user, so my understanding was that a partition was for each is not combining two is in the same partition again a comment taken out of context. This forum is to help so please lead your expertise and help fix my initial issue of no working terminal on a kali 2.0 when it is installed solely on a laptop.

Being blunt is negative critism if you don't back it up with help. Or useful comments for example your comment telling someone they can use Linux should be followed by how to use Linux perhaps a website or the redhat Bible for reading etc. Which I have read 4 years ago.

Were you able to install Terminator or Tilda?

Have you set the goal of becoming a Certified Professional for Digital Forensics, Reverse Engineering or Penetration Testing?
If so you could work for Red Hat and get additional Certification.

I never ask for a magical solution but terminal is a major part of using Linux if I can't access it I can learn it. The course will help me with learning and I though engaging in other forums other would possible a different tactic then ones mentioned on the kali.org forum.

I don't and haven't pretended to have a or want a magic solution. But banning or suggesting to ban a potentially relevant topic is ludicrous. Please also don't treat other users as complete idiots I might know solutions to your problems or other people to scared to post the same question may benefit from it.

By learning kali I am part of the customer service in time. I am studying for me ceh and I know its a long road and I am not after a shortcut.
