No Sounds

I am using Fedora Core 3.I am using intel chipset D845GLAD with on board sound card. The soundcard is detected (i think) but i still cant hear anything......

Somebody HELP!!!!

Could be a lot of things. Probably the first thing to check is: is it muted? Is the volume set to zero by the mixer(s)? This is usually the default. Also trie things as root.

Try chaning your sound server. ALSA OSS, etc..
Make sure your speaker is plugged in.
Make sure its on.
Check volume on speaker and on Fedora.

Can you provide more detail? What is it detecting, what happens when you play a test sound etc..? More detail the better.

The volume is as high as possible both in the computer and the speaker (its plugged in!!!!!)

As for the details, the device detected is:

Vendor:Intel
Model:Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M)AC'97
Audio Controller
Module:snd-intel8x0

PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE!!!!!!!

The sound device is probably /dev/dsp, or /dev/dsp is a symbolic link to the sound device. So doing:
$ cat{text file} > /dev/dsp
should produce a hiss.
This is the best way to test if it's working.

So is the kernel using that module? Should think 'dmesg' would say??

Finally I heard something on Linux

Finally after doing a complete re-install i got the sound on..........

However the funny part is that, volume control of speakeris done using the headphone slider...(even the master volume slider does not seem to have any effect ).

This does not seem right......
can somebody tell me why speaker volume is controlled by the headphone volume slider.....
(my computer does not have a seperate headphone socket ie only one audio out socket)

'my computer does not have a seperate headphone socket ie only one audio out socket'
Could that be it? It has no way of knowing if it's the speakers thar're connected or the headphones.

But lugo, what about the fact that even the master volume slider does not have any effect(even muting it does not have anyeffect)........

And by the way how do you change the mixer that is being used?
