no sound with Knoppix v3.3 on Asus A7V8X-X

I really don't know where to start. Reading and searching hasn't helped because I don't think I know what to ask. I want sound. I installed Knoppix v3.3 to the hard drive. The mobo is Asus A7V8X-X with onboard sound. KDE has KMix in the Sound choices, and it looks correct. I try to play a CD with KsCD and it loads and the time counts but no sound comes out of the speakers. When I try to use XMMS I cannot see any files on a CD. There are no system sounds either.

Could you point me in the right direction to learn what to do to get some sound. From reading threads I think you might need this information to start. What else do you need to be able to help me get moving in the right direction?
