no sound when playing cds

I'm using mandrake 9.1 and my problem is that when I try to play music tracks from my cd-rom no sound comes out. I do have sound on my computer so it seems like a strange error to me. My soundcard is an ess1869 so I use alsa to play it (the alsa version that came with mandrake) Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

have you 1) got the audio cable attached to the drive and sound card and b) turned the volume up on the mixer?

I'm pretty sure #1 is taken care of since I can play music from my cdrom on windows, and with #2, I have played with the volume settings in the mixer quite a number a times but nothing worked. Not sure what else to try.

Linux and windows play audio cd's differently. Windows is able to extract the audio from the IDE cable, where linux uses the audio cable from the ROM to the soundcard. Supposedly this is being worked on, and may be in the release for kernel 2.6

Cool
