No sound using Gnome

I am on my way but have encountered a problem. When I log in using KDE all sound functions are working fine. When I log in to Gnome I have no sound at all. It worked fine when I logged in the first time after the install but stopped after I logged into KDE for the first time. I am getting error messages telling my that sound is in use by another device.
Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like you have a persistent process holding on to the /dev/snd or audio. does sound work again in gnome if you reboot, then go directly to gnome, without going to kde first?

When I reboot into gnome I still have no sound. Do I need to install something or set up permissions to use sound in gnome?

I haven't felt this lost with a computer since the first time I saw c:>

Thanks for the reply,

I had the same problem until I set the sound server not to start in root. After that, all is good. I can't remember how I did it but that's what I did.
