No Sound - Ubuntu 8.10 - Dell Dim 8400 - PULSE uninstalled

Just recently I started to get no sound from my Dell Dimension 8400 running Ubuntu 8.10. Speakers are plugged in and I am able to get sound when I run the 9.04 live disk, but there is no video support for my card so upgrading is not an option at this time. As I said, I removed Pulse so that option has been exhausted. Master ALSA volume is not muted and no static can be heard when running tests. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Please post the output from these commands:
Code:
lspci | grep audio
arecord -l
amixer
aplay -l
What was the reason to delete the PulseAudio server?

Here is the output...

Thanks in advance for your help. I removed Pulse audio because several posts pointed to users having issues very similar to what I am experiencing.

Hi,

Did you check sound under root user?
You have to probably add your regular user to audio group.
