No Sound on PQ5 Board using Ubuntu 8.10

Hi all,

I have an Asus P5Q SE Plus board with an Intel ICH10 onboard audio chipset that does not want to produce any sound whatsoever in Ubuntu... It works just fine on my doal boot in Windows however. I've been searching everywhere but just can't figure out what the problem is; I'm alright with computers but am a Linux newb, any help would be appreciated.

PS:
1. I've already checked in alsamixer that the volumes are up,
2. I've tried killing PulseAudio,
3. I've gone into the sound prefrences to try different settings, there is no sound in any of the modes when testing
4. this user account is enabled to use audio devices.

Thanks,
Jason

silent Ubuntu

Yes similar problems here and if you get a solution I want to hear it! I suspect it has something to do with codecs for Alsa but which one? Ironic for a version of Linux that prides itself on ease of use.

Hey I actually did figure the problem out... for my case it was really more of a stupid issue than a technical issue. Turns out that Vista auto-outputs to the so-called "Front" speakers of the 5.1 surround system. Ubuntu outputs to the "Back" speakers for some reason, switching the outputs seems to have fixed the problem. I'm not sure this would help you... but if you have a surround sound card its worth a shot.
