Unhappy NO SOUND on gateway ML3109


i have just recently installed linux mint 4.0 on my gateway. i had ubuntu and had the same sound problem; no sound. i have a ATI SB450 HDA sound card. i have no sound at all. i am new at this so step by step would be very helpful.

thank you for the tip.
i've tried using alsa in terminal before and could not find my soundcard listed in it.
is this a hopeless cause?
