No sound - no idea why.

OS: Ubuntu 9.10

Sound was workin great yesterday, the only thing I've changed is when I uninstalled GDM, and I now startup with startx. I'm just wondering if by doing that I'm not flippin a switch that needs to come on for my sound.

another thing that may or may not be worth mentioning is that when i open the sound preferences system>preferences>sound and go to the hardware tab, it doesn't list any devices t modify...

Here's the output from lspci, which shows my audio device.

Am I missing something?

Does anyone know how to debug this audio problem or at least have some guides to suggest?

dreamwalking 12-29-2009 02:20 PM

I have a similar sound card (Realtek HD Audio) and I use the same modules as you.
What exactly is your model?
Quote:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec\#*
Also, did you do any changes to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf? Upgraded alsa or something? BTW, are you using a laptop?

I find it unlikely that GDM would have anything to do with sound, but I don't really know about that.

Also, did you do any changes to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf?
No
Quote:

Upgraded alsa or something?
No
Quote:

BTW, are you using a laptop?
yes
Quote:

I find it unlikely that GDM would have anything to do with sound, but I don't really know about that.
Yeah it didn't seem like it had anything to do with it to me either but it's the only change i can think of making recently.

Ok, two ideas:

The first is not very likely, but, is your user in the audio group? (
Quote:

id username
).

The second: When I was trying to configure my Realtek card in my laptop, I run into a different problem than yours, but, anyway, I had to add my laptop type in alsa-base.conf: add in the end of the file the line:

Quote:

options snd-hda-intel model=<mylaptoptype>
Maybe this would help? The types, by laptop model, for the ALC663 are:

Can you post the alsa-base.conf contents please?

Code:

gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
