no sound, mandrake 9.1
i dont have sound on anything :(
is there a script i can run, or something i can do to test it, or fix it? any other ideas?:Pengy: |
What sort of sound card do you have?
When the computer is booting in Mandrake, watch the screen to see if there is a line like Loading mixer FAILED to check on this without rebooting, open a terminal and type dmesg | less this will show you the boot result file in the terminal window post the answers here |
Hi Apodysophilia,
I had the same problem with Mandrake 9.1 that I fixed last night. It seems as though after installation my sound was muted (why I don't know). I then went to a program called aumix which from memory I think is under the multimedia -> sound menu. From this program I had to unmute all and then use a slider to increase volume. Having done this I now have sound!! Note that I had no error messages when booting and logging into KDE. Hope this helps |
Did you configure your sound-card? In installation sometimes it is configured automatically, but sometimes it doesn't do that.
to test your sound-card installation, login as root, then type sndconfig follow the steps, don't worry there is also a test there Good luck ! Note: I guess in Mandrake sndconfig package is installed by the system, it is not the case in RedHat, however you may need to install the sndconfig package from your installation CDs if it not installed |
thanks for the reply's i'll get back to you later on it.

well, everything is working.
thanks to sndconfig i found out my sound card is not supported by mandrake :(, thanks for the help |
try entering
sndconfig --noprobe this will make sndconfig load without automatically detecting the card... manually select a different sound card, this works sometimes, esp if your card is soundblaster "compatible" might do a little googling to see if anyone else has had any luck to see what settings they used. |
sndconfig
:Pengy: sound config is only for old sound cards not for new ones that use a PCI slot or onbord ;)
i no this and i am a :newbie: |
