No Sound in Ubuntu

Newb who installed 9.0.4 using Wubi on HP 8230 - everything works except no sound - have followed numerous HowTo's and still no sound - have been told probably ALSA drivers not loaded/got corrupted and should reinstall - except for this one problem, love Ubuntu!

well, how do I reinstall without losing all of my configurations for printers; wireless; Thunderbird Addressbook; Firefox favorites; etc.????

have been told to backup files say to a USB device - well, what files do I need to backup? how do I back them up? need step-by-step process, as can't seem to figure this all out

sure, wish it was easy like doing a "custom reinstall of XP"

Welcome to LQ

You should post some of the Howto's you have tried. Have you tried to configure Alsa? Open a terminal window and type sudo alsaconf enter passwd when prompt. run this and after it is finished run alsamixer you don't need to run this as root, check and make sure the volumes are not muted and that they are turned up. To navigate use the arrow keys left and right, to increase volumes use the up/down arrow keys. To unmute use the m key. When done press Esc to exit. If this does not work post the output of the command lspci to see if linux see's your sound device.

by all the HowTo's, I mean all of those that are posted on the Ubuntu Forums - one to include attempting to do exactly what you suggested for lo0ading ALSA - litsed all the output as you suggested and again, was told I needed to backup my files and use WUBI to do a complete reload of Ubuntu 9.0.4 - basically, Ubuntu is not recognizing my sound card at all! do get the BEEP when I logoff so, do know sound card is working in Ubuntu - everything is fine within Windoes!

again, no one could tell me what files to back up or how to do that? I am not afraid to use the CLI, as long as someone can tell me what to do

so what files do I backup and how do I back them up? do I drag and drop to a USB stick or what? then, once I reload Ubuntu how do I get all my configurations back in?

or, is that hopeless and should I just use a LiveCD and do a complete load of Ubuntu into its own partition and just reconfigure everything manually - would prefer not to have to do that
