No Sound in Ubuntu

For some reason I have no sound. I found someone who has the same problem with the onboard AC97, but he hasn't gotten any replies. Can someone help? How can I check to see if hardware is configured correctly? ie "like hardware manager in windows". I need my music in my OS.

For me, and this could be entirely different for you, sound was "turned off" by default. I'd start there.
