no sound in ubuntu 10.04. can some please help me?

I am very new to ubuntu. I have used other Linux operating systems, Fedora, Linux Mint, for about a year, in a dual boot with windows vista and windows xp. I am using a Gateway CX2724 notebook with a 320 gig harddrive, and it's set up with about half the hd for xp, the other for ubuntu. I had first installed Ubuntu 9.10, yesterday, in dual boot with Windows XP. i had sound at first, but when i updated the system i lost all sound. nothing from my speakers or my headphone jack. when I am at home I have my headphone jack running into a 500 watt stereo amplifier because i'm pretty serious about my music. anyway, when i was doing updates and searching for packages i needed, i noticed that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was available to upgrade my 9.10 and I figured I'd upgrade to 10.04 and not only get the newer Ubuntu version, but I had also hoped it would fix my sound problem. it did not. i still have no sound at all, and i have all the plugins installed for mp3 and ffmpeg, the same as i have done with linux mint, which is debian and based on Ubuntu. so i am somewhat familiar with this, but not with Ubuntu itself. all my sounds worked while using fedora and linux mint, so i know it's not a sound card problem, or a problem with compatability. my audio controller is an intel N10/ICH7 family high def audio contoller. i don't know if yall need any other information. it seems to me i remember something about an audio problem with ubuntu back last year when i first started reading about linux systems. something to do with pulseaudio. not sure now, and i can't find anything else now. can anyone help me with this? i really need to be able to listen to the 5,000 + mp3's i just transfered from my external. any help would be greatly appreciated.

This may be so obvious that you've already checked it, but you didn't mention checking the volume settings so I'll throw this out there: on one of my two Ubuntu boxes, the sound is muted on boot. It does not happen on the netbook, just the laptop. Both of them are Dells with Intel architecture.

I've done a little bit of checking and it seems to be not an uncommon issue. It's too minor for me to waste time trying to fix it; I just make sure it's un-muted whenever I want to play something.

This worked for me.
 

I am pretty new to Linux, and this is my first attempt to help, but I had the same problem this afternoon when trying to get Christmas music to play through an old Gateway E-3200. I found a post from "Steen" on a Linux forum. He said to open the terminal and just type "sudo gedit /etc/modules" & append "snd-cs4236" to the bottom. Save, exit, then re-start.

When I restarted, I had sound.

You could also try using an external sound card, such as this one here which plugs into your USB port.

It might even sound better then what you have.

Like the previous poster pointed out, Linux has the nasty habit of muting your volume for no apparent reason, usually after updates to alsa.

I have the same problem with ubuntu 10.10, I have checked all my settings and they are correct. The only difference is that at max volume I can hear a very small amount of sound coming from my headphones.

yes sir, that was the first thing i checked. when my sound is muted my speaker icon in the taskbar has a red x through it. this isn't the case, and i went through all my mixer and sound controls making sure the volumes were all up and that nothing was muted. but rather than try to go back to a year ago to try to find the forum section that dealt with this back then, i opted to reinstall my windows xp once again, and i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 desktop, and i've installed it on my laptop without a hitch. 180 gig for xp, 140 gig for ubuntu. i tried netbook ubuntu first. it's a nice operating system, but it doesn't give you an option to change your desktop backgrounds, and normally use pictures from my personal collection. so i installed 10.10 desktop and it plays my mp3's, my avi, mpeg, wmv and dvds's no problem as well, so it was an easy fix, although i haven't replied for two days because i've spent the last two days installing and reinstalling both operating systems. this gets old after a while. lol. but thank you very much for your response and suggestion. and you're correct, i should've clarified that i had already checked all my sound settings. have a great day/evening.

the issue was resolved by downloading and installing the newer Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version. all sound works, it play all my different video formats, so all is right in the world again. i will be using this laptop as a portable recording studio/movie theater/stereo system and to convert and burn dvd movies and music cd's. other than that, it is my music escape. i have over 5,000 mp3's on here, and the collection continues to grow. i have a double ended stereo headphone jack type extension running from my soundcard to a 500 watt mos-fet stereo amplifier and audio/video controller unit for a highpowered surround home entertainment systems. not one of the 200 or 300 dollar systems from walmart. this technics controller/amplifier runs for 900, but it's worth every penny for quality of sound. i got lucky and picked it up at a rummage sale for 10 dollars. life is good. lol. thank you all for your assistance. i am sure i will be back with another problem or 10. lol. take care everyone.
