no sound in speakers, sound in headphones

Hey All,
I've been at this for a couple of days, now I'll see if anyone else can help.
I just bought this eMachine M2350 laptop, and I couldn't get the sound to work. I made sure that the mixer settings were up, everything shows that there is sound- xmms plays files with no complaints, kscd seems to play fine and wav's seem OK. I decided to try headphones and there is sound in them. Anyone have any idea? I am running Fedora-core 2. I'm about ready to pull my hair out.
Thanx,
Sean

this sounds more like a hardware (speakers) problem...

Thanks for replying. The sound works fine under Win XP, so I don't think that there is anything wrong with the hardware. It is using the ali5451 module, and according to the manufacturer that is the correct module, although they don't give any other info on Linux. All my mixer settings are unmuted and set to max.
I had already tried the search thing and didn't find anything helpful. I will keep trying though.
Thanx,
Sean

Sorry, I posted the question really late last night and didn't check everything. The only thing I can hear out of the headphones is xmms and aplay. No cd and no system notifications. xmms is set up to use the arts output plug-in, and won't work with any other. I guess I just assumed that if one worked they all would and was too tired to check. I replied this morning from another machine and hadn't even touched this one yet. I am going to mess around with atrs and see what I can find
Thanx,
Sean
