no sound in some programs

I'm having problems with missing audio in some programs. For example, Xine won't play any audio on video files and mpg123 only gives me an error message 'No such device' when playing mp3s. However, some players like VLC and xmms plays my music (and any audio) just fine.
As far as I can see, this problem isn't occuring sometimes, but then again after reboot or restart it appears again.

Any ideas what's wrong and how it could be fixed? (I'm running Debian Sarge)

Have a look at the output pluggins for each specific program. You may need to set them to use whatever sound system you're set up with.
good luck.
