No sound in Sabayon Professional 1.1
Hi.
I have just installed Sabayon Professional 1.1 on a machine that was running Sabayon 3.4. On sign in, it gives me the following message: Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. I have tried su - ing to root and running gpasswd -a your_user_name audio with no luck. Any ideas? |
Verify if you are in audio group - groups command.
/dev/dsp is OSS device - does it exist? Is your ALSA configured to emulate OSS? |
Hi.
I have run the groups command, and it said that I am in the audio group. I have dsp. It is a link to sound/dsp. Is that correct. How do I know about ALSA configuration? Thanks |
Generally, to get sound you need working ALSA. Most sound apps nowadays do not need anything else. To start troubleshooting run lspci to determine your sound chip. Then lsmod to see if modules for your card are loaded. If they are not run alsaconf. Your desktop environment may use additional sound daemons, ESD or aRts are most common. They won't work without working ALSA setup and I personally do not see why one should use them.

Hi.
I have done as you have suggested. The sound works perfectly now when I log in as root. I verified that I am in the audio group, the output is below: root wheel audio cdrom video games cdrw usb users portage clamav messagebus haldaemon plugdev scanner kvm vboxusers Any further ideas? |
Works as root, but not as regular user
Have the same problem. If I log in as root sound is working - as a regular user not.
Have set the permission for /dev/dsp to 660 and the ownership to root:audio. The user is part of the audio group, but still no luck. Anybody solved this in the mean time? Fritz |
