no sound in mandrake 9.2 download edition
 

i posted this on the Mandrake forum but it doesnt seem to be getting many hits so i decided to post it here since this is a busier forum. if this is a violation of any rules or it causes aggrivation to users i apologize. i just want to resolve this problem a.s.a.p.

this seems to be a problem for a lot of people but i dont know how to fix it. i dont have any sound when i installed mandrake 9.2 download edition. i am on it currently. my sound card is a Cirrus CS4610/1 CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio. i read that you have to turn up the volume but i have no idea how to do this. when i go to Kmix i get this http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/...atnot/kmix.jpg

someone told me to edit /etc/modules.conf but when i tried doing that it wouldnt save and it wouldnt let me make a backup copy it just gave me the error messages .... "unable to write to file" and "unable to make a backup of the original copy"

having no sound is driving me insane so if anyone can help me it would be much abliged. also i am an uber noob so if you are going to give me a solution it cant be in code and steps will help. i run in KDE graphic interface. this is causing so much frustration i am thinking about going back to windows 98 even though it is so much worse than Mandrake.

I read your other post. Any system changes have to be done by the administrator. This is what keep Linux users from hosing their system with one wrong delete. You have to do it on purpose. Remember when you installed it, you had to enter a password for the root user? You gotta do that. From KDE or Gnome or whatever, you gotta open a terminal and type "su" without the quotes. enter the root password. Now you can screw up your system to your heart's content.

Before you do anything rash, like going back to BSOD, er win98, try taking about 45 minutes and bring yourself up to speed with Linux. More specifically, take an hour or two and learn about that great distro you got yourself involved with.

Sounds like your sound card module didn't get loaded. perhaps if you run alsaconf (as root), your card can be recognized.

Login as root and open terminal and type in sndconfig and it will take a minute or two and it will find yoru sound card. Tell it your sound cards hardware type and what not and it should work. I had this exact same problem and everyone kept telling me to type alsaconfig, a invalid command on Mandrake 9.2 I got my Crystal 16bit XC4 running by sndconfig. Try it, if you get lost, try and manually pick the sound card from a list of known hardware.

You're right. There is no alsaconfig. The utility that comes with alsa is called alsaconf. You have to be root to run it. sndconfig may work, but I know I had to actually install it before I could use it in 9.1. I'm sure that both will work, actually.

but it didnt work, im not sure if i did it right so im going to try it again.. and i tried the sndconfig command and it says that there is no such command..any other suggestions or comments as to what im doing wrong

i resolved this problem and i would like to especially like to thank TechSonic and anyone else who help me through this.
