no sound / freezing rpms Redhat 9.0
Hey im somewhat new to linux, i have used redhat in the past and havent had any problems, but now im running into 1. First problem, i have no sound, or at least that i know of. but the sound card is dected and i can hear the sample sound. but when i turn on xmms no sound or the mp3 just zooms threw, but still no sound, i went to creative to look for a driver update and there wasent any. My second problem is when i try to install using rpm's it usally always freezes my comp, or itl say cannot install missing a file, i didnt get the name of the file thow. If you have any ideas that could help me id be much appricative. Thanks!

as for sound, if the sample sound plays, there might be something in xmms. I think you right click xmms and you can change some settings for the sound card(i haven't used it in a while and i am not using X now).
rpm's suck(IMHO) for the missing files, those are dependencies that you need to install. there are a couple ways to fix that. Download all dependencies into a directory and do a rpm -ivh *.rpm while in that directory, or install them one at a time. There use to be a app called apt4rpm out there that gave you apt-get functionality for redhat/fedora distros, it's prob still being maintained and that would be a good util to use, esp if you are new(er) to *nix |
yeah the sound problem confused me because this is the same card i used on 7.2, i removed the xmms package and tried to reinstall it, that didnt work either. And thanks for the answer to the rpm problem, ill try that out :)
