no sound control in ubuntu 12.10

When selecting sound button the controls are grayed out.
This was noticed in the last week. before every thing was working.
Sound plays from you tube and Mario in Firefox. Just do not have control in the upper right control button.

You can find it in search option, start writing 'start up applications'
OR
Type in terminal
# gnome-session-properties

Now add following details.
Code:
Name : volume control
command : gnome-volume-control-applet
description : anything
