no sound at all...

Hello out there! How are you doing?!
My experience with computer began when I was already a seasoned
man and, you know, if you wanted to buy a laptop a few years ago,
you had to accept windows as OS... So I had to.
Nevertheless, I was, at that time, aware about an existing bundle
of softwares bearing the name of 'linux' and because my experience
with windows were more or less a disaster, I downloaded my first
OS containing this wonderful technology named linux & C. (if I am
allowed to say), i.e., Ubuntu 7.10. I had already, at that time,
problems with my sound device and having the DVD's working properly.
To be honest I don't remember what I did because my research and
application was on the fly but, I am quite sure, I got someone's else
hint...
A few days ago I installed Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS into a new machine which
had formerly installed another windows OS and the problem came out
again with this indication: error... NAV packet... 'It's a sound's
problem', suggested someone in a forum and, because this problem
does exist with my computer, I think this is the issue that needs to
be handled. I am looking for a simple and effective briefing in order
to getting the issue solved out and... I mean 'simple', because I can
'get lost in a glass of water' :)
Thanks in advance for your support.

can you post the exact error message please?
can you link to the forum thread you're mentioning?
can you tell me if the solution is in one of these links: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=error...+NAV+packet ?
edit: can you explain when the error occurs and what you do before you get it?
