Question no sound - ALC655, Intel ICH5 AC '97 HELP

ok my forehead is bloody from running into brick walls.
I've got a Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775-RH rev 2.0 motherboard
with Xubuntu 10.04 installed.

There is no sound! I know the sound works, when I had Win2k installed.
apparently a LOT of people are stymied by this, judging from the numerous unanswered posts.

Does ANYONE have a clue how to fix this?

Thanks
